The Catholic Sun Newspaper Article!

Exciting news!! I was contacted by St. Joan of Arc on Tuesday and they told me that a lady from The Catholic Sun wanted to interview me about our team. I did about a 30min interview with Ambria Hammel (Staff Writer) that evening! I told her all about our team, our training, the fundraising, details about our parish and details about our conference SVDP involvment & pantry. I also gave her full details on statistics about how we help in our conference community.

She said that there are a number of Catholic groups formed in the valley to do the race but that ours seemed very detailed and involved. Which she seemed very impressed with and she was also impressed with this blog site. The article should be published in the January 15th edition of The Catholic Sun Newspaper & it should also be in their blog sometime around that date. Ambria said that she may even put some pictures of us & our training on their blog. I am checking their blog daily and I will inform you if I see it on there. I have a link to their newspaper site and blog site in the right column, just underneath our Church website link. You can just click on those to take you there. Keep your eye out!

Team Training This Morning!

Well we were up and moving early this morning. We all met up at 6:45am and start up at 7. There was a pretty good group that showed and we went just over 9 miles. Here are some pics and a short video of us. You can see that it was still pretty dark and a little chilly when got started but it really warmed up. It was somewhat of a preview for the race to come. There are some pics of the team members and a one of the scenery. Also remember to sign the guest book on the side. Then check out the monthly schedule and music list down towards the bottom. I have added some new songs.

We are getting close!

The race is just a little over a month. The training will start tapering down over the next couple of weeks. You need start working on your extra hydration towards the end of December. Do not start drinking more fluids the week of the race and especially not the days before. You need to start about 2 weeks prior. That way your body is already adapted to the extra fluids and you will feel more comfortable on race day. You will probably be running to the restroom during the first couple of days but over time your body will start using the fluid more. You also need to start thinking about your etire. It will be pretty chilly for the start of the race but it will warm up and end up to be a very nice day by the finish. Wear clothing that you can peel off. So think of some clothes that you don't want back. All of the clothing thrown on the ground will be picked up by race volunteers after the race and donated to homeless shelters.

Here is what it looks like for the start of the race. Don't worry, everyone spreads out by the second mile and starts doing their own pace.

We are over $1000 for our team total donations!

With a generous donation for the Reilly's of $125 we are now at $1,105 for our team total. Thank you very much to Eileen's mother and to the Reilly's themselves for the donations! You know this is only the first time for this team and/or fundraising like this has been done for our parish's SVDP. What ever total we get to by race day will be fantastic! It's more than what we would have if we didn't do this at all. I think I/we have learned this go around what to do next time and that next year will be even bigger. I will be able to get things rolling much earlier and I know now who to contact to get the info in the bulletins. This time next year I feel that we will have more people within and outside the parish participating. At this point we also need to get some people together to go to the cheering stations or to have at the finish. We need all the support and cheers we can on race day. Again, thank you!

Training Run/Walk 10/18/08

Isaac, President Scott and Bill Z. did the training together this morning. We did a route that was layed from Scott's wife. Bill ran the 5 mile loop then Scott and Isaac walked the 7 mile loop. It was a great morning for training! We will either be going back to the canal or doing Squaw Peak next weekend. I will have some better pics next weekend for you.

The Electronic Random Pick is #2. Bill Zint receives the $50 towards his donation total!

Numbers were put next to each person's name that did not have a donation yet. Then I went to the Random Integer Generator website and put the numbers in. Congrats Bill! Deacon Phil was given the other $50 to get his donation total going, as it is the least that can be offered for everything that you do. Thank you Deacon Phil and a great big thanks to Jean Unger for the donation!

Join the Team!

Join the Team for the 2009 P.F. Chang’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona marathon/half marathon! We would like to invite you to join us as to go for the finish and raise money for St. Vincent de Paul- St. Joan of Arc Conference. This is an opportunity to get involved with fundraising for a great charity, improving your health and being a part of one of the biggest and most recognized races in the country!

What is the Society of St. Vincent de Paul? The Society of St. Vincent de Paul has been serving the homeless and economically disadvantaged populations since 1946. Through home visits, shelter, food assistance, employment services, thrift stores and outreach programs, St. Vincent de Paul provides compassion and support to individuals in need, regardless of race, origin, religion or gender.

You can either run or walk with Team Vincentians and our fundraising is a low minimum of $250 per team member. As a member of Team Vincentians you can receive a $10 discount off of your marathon or half marathon registration fee (you will be responsible for paying the registration fee), a 10% discount on merchandise at the Runner’s Den, weekly Saturday morning team runs and 4 month training schedule.

What happens to the money raised? Your donations allow St. Vincent de Paul- St. Joan of Arc Conference to serve hundreds of those in our parish boundaries who come to us for help. A portion or all of the money you raise for St. Vincent de Paul- St. Joan of Arc may go towards a person(s) in need of groceries, help with utilities, help with rent/mortgage, shelter and other outreach programs. It may also go towards the SVDP pantry at our parish to better serve those that visit the Church in need of food.

The P.F. Chang’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona marathon and half marathon is one of the best races in the country linking 3 cities (Phoenix, Scottsdale and Tempe) together and is a Boston qualifier. Both the half and full marathons start in Phoenix and end in the ASU stadium. The event also includes wheelchair races which start a couple of minutes before the half and full marathon. This is a great event with flat and fast courses to go along with the great weather. It also has live music along the course and crowds of people and cheerleaders for support.
